Bell’s palsy is a condition characterized by sudden, temporary weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles, typically on one side of the face. The exact cause is not fully understood, but it is often associated with viral infections, particularly the herpes simplex virus. Other factors may include stress, illness, or changes in the immune system. The condition results from inflammation of the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII), which controls the muscles of facial expression. Most people recover fully within weeks to months.
